What I do

Four things, done properly — not everything, done quickly.

Gas and plumbing is my own trade. For bathrooms, kitchens and decorating I work with the same regular partner, and on larger installs an assistant — sometimes a trainee engineer building their portfolio. Whoever is on site, the registration and the sign-off are mine.

Heating & plumbing

Boiler servicing and repair, new boiler installation, system conversions, unvented cylinders, power flushing, radiators and towel rails, leaks and general plumbing repairs.

Every service ends with a full flue gas analysis. "It's working" isn't the test — the numbers are.

Bathroom renovation

Full bathrooms from strip-out to final seal: tanking, tiling, plumbing, fitting and making good. Bath-to-walk-in-shower conversions are a large part of what I do — easier and safer to use every day, particularly for older family members.

The waterproofing goes on before a single tile does. Skip that step and the damage turns up years later, behind the wall.

Kitchen fitting

Units, worktops, sinks, splashbacks and flooring — plus the connections most fitters have to bring someone else in for.

By law, connecting a gas hob needs a Gas Safe registered engineer. Plenty of kitchen fitters can hang the units; far fewer can legally finish the job. I do both, and the certificate comes with it.

Home decoration & plastering

Full room refurbishments: damp and mould treated at the cause, walls replastered, woodwork, painting and flooring. Small jobs welcome too — the ones other trades won't turn out for.

Fresh emulsion over a damp wall buys a few months, not a fix. The cause gets found first.

Strip out, tank, tile, plumb and fit. The bath came out for a level-access shower, which is a great deal easier to use than climbing over a bath edge every morning.

Same footprint, same window — new units, worktop, sink, splashback and flooring. A compact kitchen gains worktop and storage from the layout, not from knocking a wall down.

Damp bedroom back into use

Damp treated, walls stripped and replastered, decorated, and new flooring laid. The finish you can see is only as good as the two steps underneath it.

The engineer

One name on every job.

I'm Dickson. I've run Dickson Maintenance Limited across Birmingham, Solihull and the wider West Midlands since 2022. Boiler services and repairs are usually just me; on installations and renovations there's an assistant or my regular partner alongside.

What doesn't change is who carries it: the gas registration is mine, the sign-off is mine, and if something needs putting right you message the same number you messaged in the first place.

Every radiator and towel rail gets checked with a level before I leave. Not just the ones on show — including the one behind the door nobody looks at.
